Here is the rule for this whole library, and it is the same one a good mentor would give you: we tell you what an ingredient is, why we reach for it, what the research actually backs up, and what it can honestly do. If a line sounds great for marketing but the evidence is not there, it does not go in here. You will make better recommendations with the honest version anyway, so that is the version you get.
One note on scope, because it matters. Cosmetics support and care for skin. They do not treat, cure, or prevent disease. That is a drug claim, and it is not what these are. So when you read "supports," "soothes," "helps," or "comforts," read them as careful cosmetic language on purpose, not as us hedging.
In Fix It Spray
Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl)
What it is. A molecule your own immune cells already make to help keep bacteria in check. In skincare it is used as a gentle, water-based mist at low strengths (studies usually use about 0.01 to 0.1 percent), and it stays stable in a mildly acidic pH (about 3.5 to 5.5).
Why we use it. This is our go-to for the in-between-appointments skin: the skin that just got waxed, shaved, or sweated in. It lets you calm and clean up the surface without piling on more actives, which is exactly what reactive skin does not need.
What the science backs up. This one has real dermatology research behind it. Reviews describe broad antibacterial activity against common skin bacteria (including Staph aureus), a genuine calming effect on inflammation, and help with itch. One human study found that about 74 percent of people with eczema-prone skin reported less itching within 72 hours. It also supports the skin surface as it heals after procedures, with low irritation, which is why you see it in post-treatment care.
What it can honestly do. Refresh reactive, post-service skin, lower surface bacteria, take the edge off redness, itch, and irritation, and do all of that while staying gentle at these low strengths.
Zinc PCA
What it is. Zinc paired with PCA, a molecule that is naturally part of the skin's own moisture system. It is used topically as a light, water-friendly ingredient.
Why we use it. To help balance an area that runs oily or breaks out from sweat and friction, without that harsh, stripped feeling.
What the science backs up. Zinc has a reasonable body of skin research behind it, especially around oil control and a mild antibacterial and calming effect. A systematic review of topical and oral zinc in acne found supportive (if mixed) results, and zinc PCA specifically has been studied for controlling oil. Think of it as a sensible, supportive ingredient, not a hero drug.
What it can honestly do. Help skin look and feel more balanced and less congested where oil and sweat are part of the picture, and pair nicely with gentle care.
In All Over Oil
Jojoba Oil
What it is. Technically a liquid wax, not an oil, and unusually close in structure to the skin's own sebum, which is why it sits so well and does not feel heavy.
Why we use it. It is the backbone of a body oil that actually absorbs instead of sitting greasy, which makes it good for post-wax slip and everyday dryness.
What the science backs up. Jojoba behaves as an emollient that softens and supports the barrier, and plant-oil research groups it among the oils with calming and barrier-repair activity. It is widely tolerated and generally considered non-comedogenic in normal use.
What it can honestly do. Soften, condition, and help skin hold onto moisture, with a non-greasy finish that supports a comfortable barrier.
Sea Buckthorn Oil
What it is. An oil rich in carotenoids and fatty acids (notably omega-7) from the sea buckthorn berry and seed. That is where the warm golden color comes from.
Why we use it. For antioxidant richness and a calming, barrier-supporting feel on skin that gets reactive easily.
What the science backs up. A growing story around calming and barrier support, with reviews and early studies pointing to comfort and recovery. Most of the strongest data is preclinical or small-scale, so we hold it accordingly.
What it can honestly do. Add antioxidant support, help skin feel more comfortable and less reactive, and contribute to overall barrier care.
Papaya Seed Oil
What it is. A light oil cold-pressed from the seeds of the papaya (Carica papaya). It is rich in fatty acids (mostly oleic acid) and carries some natural antioxidants. Because it is cold-pressed, you may see a little natural sediment in the bottle. That is a sign of minimal processing, not a flaw.
Why we use it. For a soft, cushioned skin-feel that still absorbs. It helps the oil condition dry, rough spots without turning heavy or slick.
What the science backs up. Papaya seed oil is valued mainly as a nourishing emollient with antioxidant content, and early lab work points to antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Strong human clinical trials are limited, so we keep the claims grounded.
What it can honestly do. Soften, smooth, and condition dry or rough skin, and add a little antioxidant support.
Cucumber Seed Oil
What it is. A very light oil pressed from cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seeds. It is high in linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) and plant sterols, and it is one of the lightest, fastest-absorbing oils in the blend.
Why we use it. This is the ingredient that keeps the whole formula feather-light. Linoleic acid is also one of the fatty acids the skin's own barrier is built from, so a light oil that is rich in it feels right at home on skin that does not want anything heavy.
What the science backs up. Cucumber seed oil is recognized as a light, skin-conditioning emollient with antioxidants, and linoleic acid in general has reasonable evidence for supporting the skin barrier. As with the others here, large clinical trials on the oil itself are limited, so we stay modest.
What it can honestly do. Soften and smooth with a weightless finish, and support a comfortable, non-greasy barrier feel.
Vitamin E (Tocopherol)
What it is. A well-known oil-loving antioxidant that also helps protect the oils in the formula from going off.
Why we use it. For antioxidant support in the formula and on the skin, and to help keep the product itself fresh.
What it can honestly do. Add antioxidant support, help condition skin, and double as a formula stabilizer.
In Barrier Balm
Shea Butter
What it is. A rich, buttery emollient from the shea nut. It is a classic barrier ingredient that both softens skin and helps seal moisture in.
Why we use it. With cocoa butter, it is the reason this balm deeply comforts dry skin without feeling like it clogs. It cushions skin that is dry, chafed, or over-worked.
What the science backs up. Long, strong use as an emollient that reduces water loss and softens skin. Shea is especially well regarded for barrier comfort.
What it can honestly do. Cushion, soften, and help stressed skin feel protected and hold onto moisture.
Cocoa Butter
What it is. A firm, rich butter pressed from the cocoa seed. It gives the balm its body and adds a protective, moisture-sealing layer.
Why we use it. Paired with shea, it deeply comforts dry skin and gives the balm its cushiony structure.
What the science backs up. A long-standing emollient that softens skin and slows water loss.
What it can honestly do. Soften, protect, and help hold moisture in dry, worked-over skin.
Beeswax
What it is. A natural wax made by bees. In a balm, it is a structuring, protective ingredient.
Why we use it. With candelilla wax, it forms the breathable, moisture-locking shield that is the heart of this balm. It holds moisture in and buffers skin against rubbing, while still letting skin breathe.
What the science backs up. A well-established occlusive (an ingredient that sits on top and slows water from leaving the skin) that also creates a protective surface layer.
What it can honestly do. Lay down a protective, breathable seal that holds moisture and softens the impact of friction.
Candelilla Wax
What it is. A plant-derived wax from the candelilla shrub. It is the vegan-friendly partner to beeswax.
Why we use it. Alongside beeswax, it helps form that breathable, moisture-locking shield and keeps the balm firm and stay-put.
What the science backs up. A structuring, occlusive wax used to give balms their protective, lasting texture.
What it can honestly do. Add protective, stay-put structure and help seal moisture in.
Oat Oil (Calendula-infused)
What it is. The nourishing oil pressed from oat kernels (Avena sativa). This is oat oil, not colloidal oatmeal, so it carries oat's natural soothing lipids in an emollient form. Here it is infused with calendula.
Why we use it. The calendula-infused oat oil, together with jojoba, is what helps calm the look of irritation in this balm. It brings a soft, comforted feel to reactive skin.
What the science backs up. Oat oil is valued as a skin-conditioning emollient that carries some of oat's soothing lipids. Worth being precise here: the strong dermatology evidence you may have seen for "colloidal oatmeal" is a different oat ingredient, so we frame oat oil honestly as a comforting emollient rather than borrowing those claims.
What it can honestly do. Soften skin and help calm the look of irritated, reactive skin, with a comfortable feel.
Calendula
What it is. An extract from calendula (marigold) flowers, traditionally used to soothe. It is infused into the oat oil here.
Why we use it. To add to that calm-the-look-of-irritation effect and round out the soothing feel of the balm.
What the science backs up. A long traditional history and some supportive data, but fewer high-quality trials, so we treat it as a complementary soother rather than a heavy hitter.
What it can honestly do. Contribute to a calmer, more comforted feel on reactive skin.
Jojoba Oil (Marshmallow-infused)
What it is. A liquid wax that is unusually close to the skin's own sebum, so it absorbs without a greasy film. In this balm it is infused with marshmallow root. (You will also find jojoba in All Over Oil. See that entry for the fuller write-up.)
Why we use it. It keeps the balm close to skin's own chemistry, and with the calendula-infused oat oil it helps calm the look of irritation.
What the science backs up. A well-tolerated emollient that softens and supports the barrier.
What it can honestly do. Soften, condition, and support a comfortable barrier.
Marshmallow Root
What it is. An extract from marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis), traditionally soothing and moisture-drawing. It is infused into the jojoba here.
Why we use it. To add a soft, soothing, moisture-drawing character to the balm.
What the science backs up. Traditional soothing use with limited modern trial data, so we keep the claims modest.
What it can honestly do. Add a soothing, softening feel.
Raspberry Seed Oil
What it is. An antioxidant-rich seed oil, with fatty acids, natural vitamin E, and carotenoids.
Why we use it. For antioxidant support that helps round out a rich, protective balm.
What the science backs up. Recognized for its antioxidant fatty acids. Clinical data on the oil itself is limited, so we keep the claims grounded.
What it can honestly do. Add antioxidant support and help condition skin.
Vitamin E (Tocopherol)
What it is. An oil-loving antioxidant that also helps protect the balm's oils from going off. (It appears in All Over Oil too. See that entry for more.)
Why we use it. For antioxidant support on the skin, and to help keep the balm itself fresh.
What it can honestly do. Add antioxidant support, help condition skin, and stabilize the formula.
The through-line
Notice what is not in here: no percentages we cannot back up, no "clinically proven" on ingredients that only have early data, and no disease claims. That restraint is the point. When you tell a client "this supports the skin while it recovers" and you actually mean it, you sound like the expert you are, and you never get caught overselling.
Question this too. If you have seen something different on the skin in front of you, that is real data. Bring it.
